What is LINC?

LINC is Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada. 

Who may attend ESL/LINC Classes?

  • Anyone who is 19 years of age and older and who was born outside of Canada.
  • Canadians who were born in Canada, visitors and students on student visas must pay visitor fees to attend LINC/ESL classes.

What does CLB stand for?

Canadian Language Benchmark. The assessor at the CLARS centre tests your listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. When you bring your CLB levels to us, we place you in the appropriate class. For example: If your Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing skills are (2,2,2,2), you will be placed in the CLB 1/2/3 class. If your (L,S,R,W) skills are (3,4,3,2) you will be placed in the CLB 3/4/5 class.

How to register for class?

In order to attend English classes, every student must be assessed by the YMCA/CLARS centre.  In order to register please bring:

  • Your assessment from the CLARS centre with your CLB levels.
  • Your immigration documents (PR card, Passport, immigration papers etc)
  • If you are an ESL student, $10 registration fee.

What do I need to bring to class?

Paper, binder, pens, pencils, etc.

Are your English classes FREE?

Yes.  English classes are free for all LINC students.  ESL students must pay a one-time $10 registration fee at the beginning of the school year.  ESL students are usually Canadian citizens and Refugee Claimants.

Who qualifies for ESL?

Refugee Claimants and Canadian Citizens.

Can visitors attend classes at Circle of Friends?

Yes.  The classes cost $3.00 an hour.  $45 a week for half days.  $90 a week for full-time. $9 per period.  $18 for a full day.

How old do you have to be to attend classes?

Anyone 19 years of age and older can attend English classes at Circle of Friends for Newcomers.

Do you provide daycare/childcare?

Yes. Circle of Friends has purchased daycare spots at Wesley Daycare – 80 Queen St. N. Daycare is available for LINC eligible students’ children who are 2 ½ years of age and older.  LINC students with children 6 months to 2 years can qualify for onsite childcare.  Managed by Wesley, the onsite Childcare is in the Early Years Centre on the same floor as Circle of Friends.  If your child is in the onsite childcare, you must remain onsite during the time your child is supervised.

Are your teachers certified?

All of our teachers at Circle of Friends are TESL Ontario Certified.

The weather is bad.  How do I know if class is cancelled?

In most cases, if schools are cancelled, our ESL/LINC classes are usually cancelled as well. We follow the Hamilton Wentworth Catholic District School Board’s decision. Please check the Radio or local TV Stations for information. Please remember, even if schools remain open, it is your decision whether to come to school or not.
